Nestled in a quaint alley just off the bustling streets of Nara, Takarajima invites you into a delightful journey of nostalgia and flavor. This charming café brings a touch of the past to your plate, perfectly capturing the essence of traditional Japanese café culture. With its warm, rustic decor and the gentle hum of classic melodies in the background, you’ll immediately feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

Takarajima specializes in a homestyle Japanese cuisine that speaks to the heart. Here, you’ll find popular dishes like Hayashi Rice and Omurice, both of which are crafted with skill and care. Picture a fluffy omelet blanketing a bed of savory fried rice, each bite harmonizing the flavors with a comforting embrace—this is Omurice done right! The Hayashi Rice is another must-try; a rich, beef-stew flavor served atop a mound of fluffy rice, it’s the kind of dish that warms your soul on a chilly day.

The ambiance is an intimate one, often echoing with the soft chatter of locals and the laughter of friends gathering around the terrace. Some visitors might note a faint mustiness, reminiscent of cherished old books or dusty memories. However, this merely adds to the authenticity and charm of Takarajima, as echoed by the smiles of satisfied patrons. Many rave about the cozy atmosphere, making this not just a meal, but a delightful experience to share with loved ones.

Guests have praised the friendly owners—a sweet elderly couple—who serve each dish with love and care. The warm service further enhances your dining experience, fostering a sense of community that feels almost familial. Despite some comments on the less-than-perfect smell inside, the overall sentiment leans towards affection for the restaurant’s character. Customer Billy Leung-Jok described it as “an old and cute place,” while Flosca enjoyed how it felt “like going back in time.” Even amidst the charming quirks, many agree that the lovely flavors and reasonable pricing make Takarajima a hidden gem worth discovering.

If you’re searching for an escape from tourist-packed spots in Nara, Takarajima awaits your visit. Come for the traditional homestyle dishes, stay for the atmosphere that wraps you in nostalgia—it’s more than a cafe; it's a slice of history, lovingly served on a plate.

BF picked this place off the side of one of the busy Nara shopping streets. its an old and cute place which gives a homy feel but perhaps because of all the manga on the front it was a bit musty and smokey (probably from before the ban?). That aside, the place is run by two older couple (?). We order a hayashi rice and omurice, both were delicious, and really economical. We both enjoyed how cosy (once you get over the initial smell) and how it appears to be the place that has witnessed the time has gone by over the years with stories.

This is an old fashioned restaurant where locals can find a traditional omelette Cousine. I really liked the food and the atmosphere. It's like going back in time. Many comments mention the smell, but it didn't bother me and after a few minutes you get used to it. It's part of the atmosphere! I really loved this restaurant!! Thank you a lot

I loved this place!! The restaurant is really hidden so we were so happy to find it! We sat outside, the terrace was so cute, European feels We ate omurice, it was SO good (I love omurice so might be biased) but everything was so cheap we were very pleasantly surprised. The owners were very cute, the inside was a bit smelly so we were happy to eat outside. I guess it is more an izakaya? I’m coming back for suure I loved it, ごちそうさまでした!

Nice place not filled with tourists. Great place to get some omelette rice. The plate was filled with 5 sides. It was really good. The service is a touch slow but that's becuase the chef is fixing so many things for a single dish. 100% understandable. The only complaint is that the place is old and smells a little moldy

Ao cosy!! An old couple running this cute restaurant hidden in a small alley near the busy market street ... The food is good, made with love, the decoration pretty and nice background music. The owners are very sweet and kind and they speak well English I truly recommend the stew burger it was super good !

Great place to have a quick lunch. The portions are generous. Meat or chicken is balanced by rice and vegetables. The prices are not so high and it's cosy inside. The only downside is, as mentioned in other reviews, the smell of mould. Although safe for most customers, more vulnerable people may be allergic to mould. My wife displayed symptoms of exposure to mould in a couple of hours. Please pay attention. Otherwise, the food was very nice.

The first impression is the strongest - not just psychologically but literally in the sense that the musk of aged paper not unlike an old bookshop permeates the space. And as you venture deeper you find out one of the reasons why: the owners have a sizable collection of cassettes and cds that they curate and play throughout the day. We ordered an omurice and gratin. Both were executed perfectly. Portions are generous. I feel as though this place is undeniably polarizing. The atmosphere (again, in this case literally) either makes or breaks your ability to enjoy your time here. I left happy and full.

Quaint restaurant tucked in a corner in Nara. Ordered omurice and coffee jelly with ice cream, both priced quite fairly. The old man manning the shop is very friendly and his service was very attentive. There's a lot of old figurines on display which combined with the retro music being played gives the restaurant very retro vibes!
